Background of the Study

Telemedicine has become an essential tool in healthcare delivery, especially in underserved regions where access to healthcare professionals is limited. In Nigeria, including Kaduna State, telemedicine has the potential to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers, particularly in rural and remote areas. Nurses, as primary caregivers, play a critical role in telemedicine by remotely monitoring patients, providing education, and offering support through virtual consultations (Adebayo & Onifade, 2023).

However, despite the potential benefits of telemedicine in nursing practice, several challenges exist in its implementation. These challenges include technological barriers, inadequate infrastructure, limited digital literacy, and resistance to change among healthcare providers and patients. In Kaduna State, where healthcare access is strained, these challenges may be more pronounced. This study seeks to evaluate the challenges of implementing telemedicine in nursing practice, focusing on barriers faced by nurses in the region and exploring strategies to overcome these obstacles.

Statement of the Problem

Telemedicine has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Kaduna State, especially for nurses working in rural and underserved areas. However, various barriers prevent its widespread implementation and effective use. These challenges, including technological limitations, training deficits, and resistance from healthcare workers, particularly nurses, hinder the full integration of telemedicine into nursing practice. Understanding these challenges is crucial for devising strategies to overcome them and enhance the effectiveness of telemedicine in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the challenges faced by nurses in implementing telemedicine in Kaduna State.

2. To evaluate the barriers to telemedicine adoption and use in nursing practice in Kaduna State.

3. To recommend strategies for improving the implementation of telemedicine in nursing practice in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What are the main challenges faced by nurses in implementing telemedicine in Kaduna State?

2. What are the technological and infrastructural barriers to telemedicine in nursing practice in Kaduna State?

3. What strategies can be adopted to overcome these challenges and improve telemedicine implementation in nursing practice in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Technological and infrastructural barriers significantly hinder the implementation of telemedicine in nursing practice in Kaduna State.

2. Nurses in Kaduna State face resistance to adopting telemedicine due to lack of training and digital literacy.

3. The adoption of targeted interventions and training will significantly improve the implementation of telemedicine in nursing practice in Kaduna State.

Definitions of Terms

• Telemedicine: The use of telecommunication technology to provide healthcare services remotely, including virtual consultations and remote monitoring.

• Nursing Practice: The roles, responsibilities, and activities carried out by nurses in the delivery of patient care, including education, assessment, and intervention.

• Digital Literacy: The ability to use digital technologies and tools effectively, including understanding how to use telemedicine platforms.
